True Colors

Picture this scene: We had all spent our first week in the communities we will be serving in for the next 2 years. It was our trial week. See if you can survive the bus ride there, the entire town staring at the first white person they've ever seen and following you.

Fast forward to the flight back from Bahir Dar to Addis Ababa. We drop our things off and immediately proceed to what until now was only a rumor. An ice cream place in Addis.

Not only was it true, but Phil Collins was playing the whole time we ate our biscuit and cream (cookies and cream)

My new home, come April 4th 2015 until April 4th 2017 will be a town called Azena in Amhara, Awi zone. I will continue speaking Amharic as well as acquiring Agewnya. Deekeeteema! That's 'hello' and about as good as I get.

I did as the Ethiopians did for a week and was led around like Ethan Hawke on Training Day. My town is 23k away from paved road, and further from internet. Therefore, my new mailing address will be important for contact. The old one will still work, this one is just faster.

Tim Mallard
PO Box 32
Gimjabet, Ethiopia.

The funny part is that you could probably just put Tim Mallard then Azena/Gimjabet, Ethiopia and there would be no doubt who you are sending the mail to. The lady knows the only other forenji to ever live in the area, who has since left.

I'm going to see what the people want first before going and making any proclamations about future projects, but I have a suspicion hygiene is going to be a thing.

In other news, I ran 14 miles around Crater Lake in Butajira with a fellow trainee. We had Snickers and sun rise and a beautiful Crater Lake. Phil Collins and Crater Lake are the most important things I can tell you about. Computer dead!

Ciao!
